Steampunk hairpin Tempus Fugit

A while ago I made a hairpin to go with a steampunk outfit. I call it Tempus Fugit because I tinkered wings onto a clockwork.

It all started with a little scribble. And because plans usually don’t survive any longer than me starting work, I skipped making a plan and just tinkered away.

Scribble for the basic idea, a cardboard template for the wings and some bits and bobs for inspiration on details.

First I intended to make the wings out of some leather. I changed my mind as I couldn’t find anything suitable in my box of odds and sods.  So I took a little piece of linen, cut out the wings and imbued it with a mixture of water and liquid glue to harden the linen. This procedure makes the linen look grey and dark which I didn’t like at all. After the wings dried completely I painted them white which I like better.

Then I used copper-coloured wire and glass beads to make the struts
Now, that’s sorted. So far I didn’t think about the body of my „insect“. I had several ideas. Rummaging around in my gear box I dug out this clockwork and that was it.

First I took two extra long hair pins and glued them to the centre with two-component adhesive. Then I glued on the wings. To cover up the adhesive area I added some washers.

Here you can see how long the hair pin is

The whole hair pin is rather heavy. I therefore recommend wearing it with a hairdo on which it can rest. I made a chignon which I stabilized with a donut cushion. The hair pin sat on that all day long without making any troubles.

I did not yet like how it looked where the wings went into the clockwork. So I took my toolbox out again

Now my hair pin is finished and looks like this:

Ich war gerade bei Dir stöbern. Hilfe! Jetzt habe ich einen kreativen Flash. Das liegt ja alles genau auf meiner Linie. Besonders die Boxen haben es mir angetan – und davon hat man ja auch nie genügend.

I always looks for things to make or accessorize the proper „Steam-punk“ outfit…love that style!

      Thank you very much 🙂
I like those accesories and also combine them with my every-day outfits every now and again. They really add that little special thing to a simple style.

😉 there’s more to steampunk than just the fashion, isn’t it. Although I admit that I really like the aesthetics.

Very true – and, I love the aesthetics as well! I think that they are a bonus to being a steampunk, LOL

I did all those maker, recycling, upcycling things before I even knew about steampunk. And I enjoyed being the little weirdo of the village, doing things my way 😉
So all I had to do was adding the outfit.

ROFL – great minds think alike…I’m the same way. Even with the vintage things that I own (1930’s-era typewriter, grandfather clock, hurricane lamps, etc.) – they are used on a daily basis, not just sitting and gathering dust! I’m working on a little post of pictures which show some of my home décor.
              🙂

That sounds awesome! Can’t wait to see this.
We can’t have so many vintage things due to limited space (reenactment and larp take their toll), but our house is 250 years old and furnished mainly with different woods. So we don’t have to go completely modern.

Very nice! I have yet to attend a LARP or re-enactment event, but have always wanted to…they are definitely expensive hobbies!
              😉

Well, just come over 🙂 We are right now organising a steampunk/zombie larp for July next year.
Larp and reenactment aren’t that expensive if you make it instead of buy it and start out as a simple peasant instead of the queen.

I would love to! I still have to prioritize expenses, unfortunately…it’s difficult enough for me to travel here in the States, let alone going overseas – but, I would do it in a minute if fortune smiles on me a bit more brightly!

I’m a warrior, not a peasant or a queen…so leather and chain is what I wear, along with the brass accents! I think that I need to learn how to work leather things, to keep me in as many leather dusters, corsets, and bustiers as possible, LOL!
              😉

Warrior is a little more difficult 🙂 Still a peasant outfit gives you some nice basics. Except you want to wear leather and chain only in Xena style 😀
Being a female warrior is impossible in reenactment if you want to be historically accurate. For larp you should have some basic fighting skills. And yes, that’s a little more expensive. Working with leather just needs a little exercising, no magic involved. Do you know Worbla? Phantastic stuff that can be shaped with a hot hairdryer. Makes amazing phantasy armours.

Yeah, that’s the only problem with my personality – I fight too much for historical accuracy, LOL!
              😉

I’ve heard of Worbla, but don’t remember where or when…I’m going to research it, though – thanks for the hint!
              🙂

🙂 Then forget about historical accuracy and do your thing. Over here we have more faires with a lot of phantasy than we have historically accurate events.
Then you can also sport your leather and worbla corsets 😉

LOL – sometimes, I think just attending a LARP event, for me, is historically inaccurate! I stand out like a sore thumb no matter what I wear, ROFL
